“The smell of Grandma’s Oatmeal Crisps in the oven overwhelmed our senses when we walked in the farm house door. We rushed into the kitchen where we were joyfully received as warm arms engulfed us and a kiss planted on our cheek. We received our treasured cookie and raced out to explore the animals and the garden.” - Jimetta Mayne – Memories at Grandma’s
Grandma's house was a place filled with wonder in my eyes. Permission was granted to explore the farm, and simply be a kid. Her home was a safe place where I was unconditionally loved and heard. I never received an unkind word from the lips of my Grandma, only words of encouragement. Her eyes twinkled at the joy of seeing me and her arms were always safe to go to for a cuddle.
Some of my greatest joys have been raising my children and enjoying my grandchildren. It’s a thrill watching them grow and see through their eyes. These books were originally written as a legacy of remembrance of all our adventures together. The books have since expanded to touch a larger audience giving children an opportunity to experience “life with Grandma” where they are celebrated and enjoyed.
For me, life has always been an adventure filled with wonder, beauty and delight. It was also filled with ugliness, pain and fear. We are always given a choice as to what lens we are going to see the world through. I was blessed with parents that gave me a lens of wonder and hope. What lenses are your littles going to wear, and who are they going to trust? Hopefully it’s the adults in their lives nurturing and loving them well, that give them eyes of hope and faith to view their world.
From the names in each book, to the illustrations, the Grandma Metta series is written with great intentionality. Even the name “Metta” was used for what it represents: loving-kindness, friendliness, benevolence, amity, friendship, good will, kindness, and an active interest in others. Cultivating loving-kindness towards themselves, then one's loved ones, friends, teachers, strangers, enemies, and finally towards all. These are the character traits of Grandma Metta in the book, one who loves extravagantly and is full of kindness. As the lead character, I desired to have her embody my reality of the nature of God, for we were all created in His image.
Within every Grandma Metta book there are questions to open up a conversation and explore the hearts of the little ones reading each book. For each of you may you count it an honor to be entrusted to nurture and have a positive influence in their young lives. Bless you as you pour into this next generation of world changers.
